How to Interact with Insurance Companies (Transcript)

Let's talk a little bit about how you should interact with the various insurance companies.

Number one, you need to know that there are generally two insurance companies involved in your case. There's an insurance company representing the at-fault party. There's also your own insurance company. The first rule is, you should never, and I'll repeat, never talk to the at-fault party's insurance company. 

An adjuster may call you. They may try to befriend you and you may get the impression that they're trying to help you. They are not trying to help you. They are trying to get information from you to use against you later on to try to defeat your claim. So, again, you should never talk to the at-fault party prior to consulting with our office.

The second insurance company, of course, is your own insurance company. I would counsel you not to talk to your own insurance company about anything except a resolution of your property damage claim. You can talk to your insurance company about your property damage claim. They will assist you oftentimes in locating a shop where you can get your car fixed. But you should never talk to them about your injuries or how the accident happened. Because, again, if you have UM type coverage, we may be making a claim against them and they will use whatever information you gave them against you to try to defeat your claim.
