Earth Day at Eckerd College
April 26, 2024
In honor of Earth Day, the DHC/STC Green Team took part in a sustainability tour of the Eckerd College campus to glean best practices to implement back at the office. Attendees visited the community farm, recycling center, living shoreline, and bike repair shop. They learned about various projects including composting, recycling, plastic reduction, Yellow & White Bike Programs, Trash to Treasure, invasive non-native species removal, Florida native landscaping, and sea level mitigation plans. Thanks to Evan Bollier, Director of the Office of Sustainability, for his insightful tour. For more information on upcoming events or to join the Green Team, visit dhclaw.com/green.
Going Green: Nine Principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping
March 2, 2024
The DHC/STC Green Team organized its first-ever speaker series on the Nine Principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™. The program aimed to educate attendees on how to easily incorporate one or more of these principles into their landscaping. Presenter Doris Heitzmann, the FloridaFriendly Landscaping™ Program Manager from UF/IFAS Pinellas County, talked about creating beautiful and low-maintenance Florida-friendly landscapes that conserve water, are eco-friendly, and can save money and time. The Palms of Largo generously sponsored a delicious fallthemed lunch for the attendees. Simone and Rep DeLoach recently implemented all nine principles in their personal yard and received recognition as a “FloridaFriendly Landscape” for using sustainable landscaping practices.
