For more than four decades, Peter T. Hofstra played a central role in shaping the success and reputation of DeLoach, Hofstra & Cavonis, P.A. Following his recent passing, we reflect on his lasting professional legacy—one defined not only by legal expertise, but by steady judgment, integrity, and a deep commitment to client service.
Although he initially considered a career in medicine, Peter ultimately found his calling in the law—a path that would leave a lasting mark on both the firm and the community it serves. He joined the firm at the end of 1976 as a law clerk under the mentorship of then–sole practitioner Dennis R. DeLoach Jr. After graduating from Stetson University College of Law, he became an Associate Attorney in 1978 and was named Partner in 1982 when the firm became DeLoach & Hofstra, P.A.
Peter built a highly respected real estate practice, helping establish the firm as a leader in real estate acquisitions, condominium and association law. Working closely with Dennis, he advised developers on projects ranging from modest residential communities to large-scale, multi-million-dollar developments, while also representing numerous condominium and homeowner associations throughout Pinellas County.
During the real estate development boom along the beaches and surrounding communities, Peter and Dennis developed thriving real estate practices serving both residential and commercial clients. In response to growing demand, they co-founded Seminole Title Company in 1993, expanding the firm’s ability to guide clients through real estate transactions with efficiency, continuity, and trusted counsel—an enduring part of Peter’s professional legacy.
Peter exemplified the firm’s philosophy through his direct and honest approach to client service. As he once said, “I always try to be honest and upfront with a client. If the law does not support the client’s position, I won’t hesitate to say that he or she is wasting their money. But if I can find a way to resolve the issue, I will.” That clarity and integrity earned him the respect of clients, colleagues, and the broader community.
Beyond his practice, Peter remained active in the community, contributing to organizations such as the Seminole Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Seminole Breakfast Club, and Oakhurst United Methodist Church. He also served as a City Councilor for the City of Seminole and was honored as Mr. Seminole in 2010.
When Peter retired at the end of 2017, he reflected with gratitude on a career that began as a law clerk and grew into a lifetime of service. He credited the firm’s success to those around him and expressed deep appreciation for his longtime assistant, Karen Snyder, who shared, “Peter was the only father figure for me. I feel so blessed to have had so many fun years with him.”
Peter also spoke warmly of his partnership with Dennis, noting that in all their years working together, they never argued—a testament to mutual respect and shared values. Dennis recalled, “Peter was very dependable, an excellent attorney and a good friend. He was a good man and had a keen sense of humor and would give a wry smile when he would respond to something that was said. Peter had a deliberate manner, and I never saw him flustered or angry. He would have made an excellent judge. I was blessed to know him and have him as a friend, a law partner, and a business partner for all those years.”
Peter's legacy endures in the firm he helped build, the services he helped expand, and the many clients and colleagues who benefited from his counsel. His contributions remain an integral part of the history and continued success of DeLoach, Hofstra & Cavonis, P.A. and Seminole Title Company. Equally lasting is his impact as a mentor, most notably to Attorney Joseph Murphy, who followed in his footsteps in real estate law and title operations—carrying forward the standard of excellence, professionalism, and client service that Peter helped define. Joe shared, “Peter was a tremendous mentor and friend. Incredibly smart, kind, and funny. I will miss his stories most of all. Those of us who had the privilege of working with him were truly fortunate—I know I was.”
Above all else, Peter was a devoted family man—a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Our hearts are with his wife, Kim, and his sons, Peter and Clayton, as they celebrate his life and legacy.
